BIOLOGY CO-OP

EMPLOYER HANDOUT

TOOLS & SKILLS

Skills: Design, Ideation, Marketing, Writing

Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

OVERVIEW

The objective of this project markets Biology

Co-op to potential employers for the department. This handout provides necessary information for new employers to know more about the Biology Co-op program and sample jobs from previous and existing employers.

DESIGN RATIONALE

The Biology Co-op department wants to advertise their programs to potential employers. Due to a high amount of employment offer in the past for laboratory work, the poster aims to target employers and jobs that are more focused on outdoor fieldwork and activities.

The Biology department would like to incorporate images of students working in the field as well as sufficient content to give employers a comprehensive understanding of the Biology Co-op program.

DRAFT 1

FRONT PAGE

draft 1 rationale

BACK PAGE

In this draft, all 3 images used on the handout focuses on students working in the field. Additionally, it incorporates various colours, making the handout extremely lively and interesting to look at. However, the first page of the handout should only cover areas of

Co-op and the Biology fieldwork, rather than providing employers with an abundance of information like the Draft above.

DRAFT 2

BACK PAGE

Making some changes to the first draft, Draft 2 handout revised the look of the front page by eliminating a section that should be put on the back page as additional information. Front pages are used for providing generic information about the program to provide employers with an overview of the Biology Co-op program. Additionally, the lack of space on the back page forces me to eliminate one image, leaving the page with an abundance of text that overwhelms the one image.

DRAFT 3

 rationale

BACK PAGE

The changes in Draft 3 aims to make the front page of the handout stand out even more. By incorporating 3 images on the front page, the Biology Co-op handout portrays the program to be lively, colourful, and fun. However, on the back page, there are no images, leaving it quite barren and text dense. The final version of the handout will aim to eliminate the issue of text-heavy content as well as making finishing touches.

FINAL DRAFT

final draft

rationale

The final version of the Biology handout features 5 images of students working in the field, both in groups and individual headshots. By incorporating different kinds of photos, employers are attracted to the different abilities and diversities that SFU Biology students bring to the field. Additionally, I shortened the texts in each section in order to maintain the balance of text to images. Not only that, the Biology image header was darkened to put emphasis on the department title. The coordinator's contact information and the Science Co-op program website is also placed on the back page of the handout for employers to directly contact. Overall, this project has been very fun to do, for it allows for creativity and writing opportunities. Although there weren't as many design skills needed for this project, it taught me a lot about organization and prioritization skills. Without prioritization, the handout could end up a complete disaster, with an abundance of text which will overwhelm and bore its audience. Additionally, without organization skills, I wouldn't have been able to create an effective template that showcases both the information provided by written content for the employers or the lively images of students working in the field.
